The HypnoBirthing® Childbirth method is as much a philosophy of birth as it is a technique for achieving a satisfying, relaxing and stress-free method of birthing. HypnoBirthing teaches you, along with your birthing companion, the art and joy of experiencing birth in a more comfortable manner. You will learn to call upon your body’s own natural relaxant and thus lessen or eliminate discomfort and the need for medication. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth and when mind and body are in harmony, nature is free to function in the same well-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.
HypnoBirthing teaches you to release all prior programming about birth, how to trust your body and work with it, as well as how to free yourself of harmful emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and unyielding muscles.
HypnoBirthing will teach you the art of using your own natural birthing instincts. With Hypnobirthing you will be aware and fully in control but profoundly relaxed on your baby’s birthing day.
Where it all began….
Dr. Grantly Dick-Read was an early twentieth century Obstetrician who first became aware of the real nature of childbirth when he attended a birth in a hovel in the east end of London, in 1913. On this occasion, he noticed the feeling of peace and tranquility in the room as the woman laboured but when he offered chloroform just prior to delivery, the woman refused and proceeded to give birth quietly and easily without distress. Before he left, Dr. Dick-Read enquired as to why she had refused the chloroform and she gave him an answer that was to change his life. She thought for a moment and then said, ‘It didn’t hurt, it wasn’t supposed to, was it Doctor?’
This event led Dr. Dick-Read to embark on a journey of research, which led him eventually to his theory that when fear is not present, pain is not present. He aptly named this theory the ‘Fear-tension-pain syndrome’.
Marie Mongan developed Hypnobirthing after making the decision to not have a “usual birth” where drugged compliance and no recollection of the experience was the considered the norm. Marie had a goal, she wanted to discard all the negative literature she had discovered about childbirth and focus on Dick-Read’s theory of eliminating the Fear-Tension-Pain syndrome. Marie believed that birthing could be a natural occurrence, it could be done whilst the mother is awake and alert and most importantly free of pain. In the end with determination Marie got her wish, a natural, pain free and enjoyable birth. Following this success Marie then went on to study hypnotherapy and realised that the relaxation techniques she had created for herself for her birthing days were actually self hypnosis. Marie used her hypnotherapy skills to enable her Daughter Maura to birth in a calm manner, and so HypnoBirthing was born.
In early 1990, the first HypnoBirthing baby was born using the program that Marie Mongan had developed. From thereafter, the demand by women for a calm and gentle birth increased. Today, HypnoBirthing is taught in over 22 countries and more women are achieving their own dream of a gentle, calm and pain free birth.
